Statement of Intent

The LDA Expressive Arts curriculum intends to provide all pupils with inspirational and creative learning experiences, fostering a love of learning, discovering their talents and confidence. Pupils will embrace the power and purpose of the Arts subjects and find their own place within it.

Curriculum Aims

The LDA Drama curriculum focuses on three core pillars of creating, performing and evaluating. Drama aims to evoke creativity and equip learners with powerful knowledge of genre and style, and performance skills that will be developed sequentially throughout their cross-curricular education and beyond. When creating Drama, pupils will develop their use of social skills through independent practical exploration, as well as with others. Pupils will learn the core knowledge, which informs the creative process, allowing them to devise performances with clear and precise intentions to communicate meaning. The knowledge gained from this creative process, will allow pupils to develop an understanding of a wide variety of different practitioners and styles of theatre.

Pupils will develop the knowledge and understanding of an effective performance, demonstrating their ability to master a wide variety of physical and vocal skills. Pupils will then showcase their knowledge of fundamental concepts and dramatic techniques through regular performance opportunities, which allows pupils to build their confidence and resilience.

Through evaluating, pupils will utilise their knowledge of dramatic skills, techniques, styles and genres to analyse and reflect on performance material. Pupils will engage in verbal and written tasks offering regular constructive feedback in order to improve their own work and those of others.

Curriculum Model 2022-2023

In KS4 pupils will experience 3 lessons of their chosen Arts subject per week; these lessons are divided into 1 double lesson per week and 1 single lesson per week.

Overview

GCSE Drama:

Year 10

Pupils must draw on and demonstrate a practical understanding of the subject. Pupils must develop their ability to carry out research, develop their own ideas, collaborate with others, rehearse, refine and amend their work in progress and analyse and evaluate their own process of creating devised drama. Pupils must also learn how to contribute to devised drama in a live theatre context for an audience where they can either contribute as a performer or a designer. They must develop their ability to create and communicate meaning and realise artistic intentions in devised drama. Pupils must learn how to contribute to text based drama in front of an audience in a live theatre setting. Pupils must demonstrate a practical comprehension of the academic information listed in the knowledge and understanding section of the exam board. In text-based theatre, they must improve their abilities to analyse texts, generate and transmit meaning and realise artistic intentions.

Year 11

Pupils must learn how to contribute to text based drama in front of an audience in a live theatre setting. Pupils must demonstrate a practical comprehension of the academic information listed in the knowledge and understanding section of the exam board. In text-based theatre, they must improve their abilities to analyse texts, generate and transmit meaning and realise artistic intentions. Pupils will study and practically explore Blood Brothers. The purpose of the study should be to; build knowledge and comprehension (as indicated within knowledge and understanding) of the plays qualities and setting and explore ideas about how the play could be explored practically. All pupils will be required to answer one short response question about design, context and/ or theatrical norms on the exam. Pupils must learn to analyse and critique the work of live theatre creators. Pupils should strive to comprehend performances in terms of the appropriate content outlined in knowledge and understanding, as well as how the play was interpreted in the production and what messages the company was attempting to communicate. Pupils should also analyse the skills displayed by the performances and how successfully this was communicated to the audience by the performers and how design skills are demonstrated in the production and how this was successfully communicated to the audience through design.
