Lord Derby Academy Strikes Gold – Liverpool Reading Quality Mark

If we don’t learn to love books’ we don’t read. And if we don’t read widely, we don’t think deeply.

On Thursday February 11th Lord Derby Academy was awarded the very prestigious Gold Award Liverpool Reading Quality Mark. This is a tremendous achievement and is in recognition that the school is proactive in promoting reading, raising the profile of literacy to improve achievement. Reading Quality Mark Assessor said: “There is a whole school drive to instil a culture and love of reading and across the school.”
She recognised that Governors and Senior Leaders are supportive of the focus on literacy across all subjects and that they have an important role in helping to set challenging reading targets and in evaluating the impact of reading strategies. She was extremely impressed with the way staff and pupils thoroughly enjoyed Drop Everything and Read each week.
The pupils interviewed were articulate and confident, and eagerly discussed books they enjoyed reading and the opportunities for reading in school and at home.

Pupils are encouraged to read widely and frequently, and not only in English or literacy lessons. This is supported by DEAR, subject specific ‘recommended reads’, all staff ‘recommended reads.

Well done, Lord Derby Academy!
